Car Recalls Recapped: What is Happening in the Recall World? MI Auto Times Shares

More than 750,000 vehicles have been included in car recalls from different major automakers and all within the first full week of September. MI Auto Times share the details of the latest recalls.

DETROIT, M.I. – Car recalls may come in waves and different automakers have to fix issues that may arise with vehicles that are included in their lineups. With so many large car recalls during the month of September, MI Auto Times is recapping who has recalled what and the details on the potential problems.

Who and What

Car recalls are affecting many manufactures as the last two weeks have seen hundreds of thousands of cars included in new recalls. Some include:

  • 2009-2011 Honda Pilot 310,773
  • 2010-2011 Subaru Legacy and Outback 195,080; Subaru model years 2002-2007 Impreza and 2003-2008 Forester are also being recalled
  • 2011 Volkswagen Jetta 30,294
  • 2007-2008 Hyundai Santa Fe and Veracruz 205,233
  • 2007-2008 Kia Sorento 10,631

All of these vehicles have potential problems that range from seat belts to airbags, but how serious are the potential problems?

Problem Details


The Honda Pilots that were manufactured from March 13, 2008 to August 30, 2011 may have incomplete seatbelt stitches, or the stitches may be missing completely missing. If either of these two problems occur with the stitching, the seatbelt may detach from the anchor webbing, and this could include a higher risk of personal injury should a collision occur.

This may have been due to an "inexperienced" sewing machine operator at the supplier for Honda in Mexico. There was one occurrence in May 2010 and, when the second occurred in August 2011, Honda began a voluntary recall.


In April of this year, Subaru received seven different complaints about front control-arm failures. Two of the owners who made the complaints lost the control of the vehicle, but there were no crashes or any other incidents reported. As a result of these complaints, Subaru is recalling Impreza models from 2002-2007 and Forester crossovers from 2003-2008. The Saab 9-2x hatchbacks, which carry similar mechanical equipment as the Forester and Impreza, are also being recalled; in total, these three models represent 295,123 recalls.

More bad news for Subaru continues as the Subaru Outback and Legacy models from model years 2010-2011 contain parts that in a worst-case scenario may catch fire. In the windshield motor there are components that make up the cover of the motor. In some cases, the components overheat and may begin to melt. If the cover melts, there is a possibility of the cover catching fire.


There are different problems that arise with vehicles, and the all-new Jetta models seem to have a unique problem with their tailpipe designs. It seems the stainless steel exhaust pipe installed at a port of entry and at the dealerships sticks out farther than the manufacturer was considering as dangerous. If the tips of the pipes are hot, owners, passengers and others may walk by and burn their legs on the tips. As of now, there have been less than 10 complaints of burns, but it was enough of a problem to recall the many vehicles.


Car recalls of the Hyundai Santa Fe and Veracruz were made because of the driver's air bag electrical circuit. The clock spring in the contact assembly system may become damaged over time through normal wear and tear within the driver's air bag supplemental restraint system. If the spring within the electrical circuit meets high resistance, there is the possibility of the air bag not deploying if there was a collision. Non-deployment means there could be insufficient protection to the driver.


The vehicle's occupant classification system (OCS) communicates with the air bag system to tell the passenger air bag to turn off depending on the occupant seated. Normally the front passenger air bag turns off in circumstances such as when children or small adults occupy the seat. If the OCS does not classify the occupant properly, the air bag can become deactivated and not deploy if there was a frontal collision.
